My name is Ermenegilda Müller, known as Gilda, and I come from french-speaking Switzerland. Passionate about art as well as history, I practiced the first and studied the second for as long as I can remember. When it comes to art, I am self-taught except for a short passage at the Reykjavík School of Visual Arts (Myndlístaskólinn í Reykjavík) in 2016-2017.
My favorite technique is pen and ink drawing, which reminds me of the engravings on wood and copper of the time-periods I research – i.e. the Middle Age and the Early Modern period. I also love watercolour, colour pencils, and gouache, and often blend these different media. I usually draw from imagination or loosely following photo references. My subjects are a blend of ancient stories, dreams, and my perception of nature, which I love to sketch and observe.
I could never quite choose between illustration and fine art and, to be frank, I would rather not sacrifice one for the other. I feel that the distinction between the two mattered little to the artists who inspire me the most, such as Gustave Doré, Theodor Kittelsen, Alfred Kubin or Roland Topor.
I have been showing my work in galleries and museums for more than ten years. Since 2017, I have been exhibiting in gallery Bachlechner, near Zürich, on a regular basis. You can see some of my artworks on permanent display there.
I also create illustrations, especially for other artists (musicians, poets, dancers, filmmakers... ) or in relation to my study field, Old Norse-Icelandic. Since 2020, I am part of the bande dessinée collective Splotch! and am currently working on a comic of my own.
